Structural, ultrastructural, and morphometric study of the zebrafish ocular surface: a model for human corneal diseases?

2018

Purpose: A morphological and morphometric study of the adult zebrafish ocular surface was performed to provide a comprehensive description of its parts and to evaluate its similarity to the human. Materials and Methods: The eyes of adult zebrafish were processed for light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and for immunohistochemical stain of corneal nerves; a morphometric analysis was also performed on several morphological parameters. Results: The corneal epithelium was formed by five layers of cells. No Bowman’s layer could be demonstrated. The stroma consisted of lamellae of different thickness with few keratocytes. The Descemet’s membrane was absent as the flat and polygon…

The Damage of Ocular Surface Due to Uncontrolled Intraocular Pressure in Neovascular Glaucoma

2021

Abstract Neovascular Glaucoma (NVG) is a severe form of glaucoma characterized by neovascularization and the proliferation of fibrovascular tissue in the anterior chamber angle. Patients with NVG generally present with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and may experience severe pain. Ocular surface is affected by high IOP and can lead from moderated to marked conjunctival congestion that is frequently associated with edematous cornea. The aim of the study is to show how the high IOP can affect the ocular surface of the NVG patients and how we can treat and prevent the suffering. Materials and methods: We took in the study a number of 38 eyes from 35 patients with NVG in stage 3 with angle…

Does endogenous serum oestrogen play a role in meibomian gland dysfunction in postmenopausal women with dry eye?

2016

Aim To explore the relationship between serum concentration of sex hormones and dry eye symptoms and signs in postmenopausal women. Methods A cross-sectional analysis was undertaken. Subjects were 46 postmenopausal women with dry eye (mean age 64.4±5.2 years, 13.7±6.4 years since menopause; not undergoing hormone replacement therapy). Ocular symptoms (Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Ocular Comfort Index (OCI)), tear function (tear osmolarity, non-invasive tear break-up time, tear secretion), corneal and conjunctival staining, and meibomian gland (MG) appearance, were recorded. Venous blood was collected and serum concentrations of 17β-oestradiol (E2), 3-α-androstanediol-glucuronide …

Approche nutritionnelle de la thérapie du syndrome de l'œil sec : prévention par les acides gras polyinsaturés

2008

Dry eye disease affects 15% of the population over the age of 65. It is characterized mainly by inflammation of the ocular surface (tear film, conjunctiva and cornea) which represents a relevant target for therapeutic strategies. The side effects and long-term intolerance of anti-inflammatory drugs give rise to an increasing interest for dietary components exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In these studies, we developed a scopolamine-induced dry eye model in the rat that mimics changes occurring in Humans suffering from moderate dry eye. We described the time course of clinical signs, inflammation and mucin production loss. We investigated…

Corneal confocal scanning laser microscopy in patients with dry eye disease treated with topical cyclosporine

2017

Purpose To investigate the effect of cyclosporine on corneal ultrastructure and on major signs and symptoms of patients with dry eye disease.Patients and methods In this prospective cohort study, patients with dry eye disease were treated with a drop of cyclosporine 0.05% twice daily. Clinical evaluation was carried out at baseline and at months 1, 3, and 6. All patients completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, and tear film break-up time (BUT), fluorescein and lissamine green staining, and Schirmer test were carried out. In vivo confocal microscopy was also performed and epithelial cellular density, keratocyte activation, and subbasal plexus morphology were assessed…

Gentamicin, norfloxacin and lysozyme concentration in human tears: in vivo and in vitro study

1992

Hen's egg lysozyme (HEL) activity was measured in vitro with gentamicin and norfloxacin by a turbidimetric technique. Gentamicin at the concentration of 10(-3) M inhibited HEL activity by 39%, while 10(-3) M norfloxacin did not affect HEL activity. However, an in vivo study in healthy persons did not show any significant statistical difference in tear lysozyme activity when 0.3% gentamicin or 0.3% norfloxacin were topically applied.

How Do Different Digital Displays Affect the Ocular Surface?

2020

Digital display use has been accepted as a contributing factor to dry eye disease. Nowadays, plenty of new models of digital displays have been developed, and the differences in their nature and the ways in which they are set and used may contribute to differences in the eye-related problems they cause. This study aimed to analyze the differences in ocular surface, tear film, and visual fatigue parameters after reading on different digital displays, with and without initial instillation of artificial tears.Thirty-one healthy individuals ranging in age from 20 to 26 years (mean ± standard deviation, 21.26 ± 1.73 years) were included in this prospective clinical study. Subjects' ocular surface…

A 12-month Prospective Study of Tear Osmolarity in Contact Lens Wearers Refitted with Daily Disposable Soft Contact Lenses

2020

SIGNIFICANCE Tear osmolarity has been reported as one of the best diagnostic tests for dry eye disease and its management. Contact lens wear is thought to influence tear homeostasis. Understanding how regular wear of contact lenses and their type affect tear osmolarity is important. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess changes in tear osmolarity and ocular symptoms over a period of 12 months following refitting contact lens wearers with daily disposable contact lenses. METHODS Fifty subjects aged (mean ± SD) 26 ± 4 years were refitted with either silicone-hydrogel (delefilcon A, SiHy, n = 34) or hydrogel (omafilcon A, Hy, n = 16) daily disposable soft contact lenses. Study includ…

Meibomian glands structure in daily disposable soft contact lens wearers: a one‐year follow‐up study

2020

Purpose To assess the impact of daily disposable soft contact lenses on meibomian gland morphology over a period of 12 months. Methods Forty-one subjects (33 experienced and 8 neophytes) were fitted with either silicone-hydrogel or hydrogel daily contact lenses. The study protocol included four visits: baseline, day-2 for contact lens fit and follow-up measurements, as well as after 6 and 12 months of lens wear. Non-contact infrared meibography images were acquired with Keratograph 5M topographer (www.oculus.de) and analysed with an automated method, which objectively estimates the area of gland atrophy, gland length and width, number of glands and gland irregularity. Protocol at follow-up …
